Choosing a reliable domain or web host
Several factors must be considered when selecting a domain or web hosting company. Consider the following factors in your choice of web host providers they are important features of quality web hosting providers:
1. Reliability. It is vital that you choose a web hosting company that is reliable choose a web host that has a good reputation. You can research his using many of the different methods on the Internet I will point you to one of the best web hosting providers that I know of. Click Here to go directly to there web site. Reliability means that they deliver what they claim and the customers web sites are always on. i.e. 99.9% of the time. You will get a good feel from the testimonials of the existing customers and from the Awards earned in the industry.
2. Hosting Details. Review the details of the web hosting provider you are looking at and compare it with what you want and need in a web hosting provider.
Is it Linux or Windows Hosting?
Most websites are hosted on a Linux platform and most web site owners prefer web hosting that uses Linux servers for Web Hosting. With Linux Servers you have many options and customization feature and you don’t need to know Linux to operate you web hosting account. Most of the top Linux Web hosting providers offer cPanel and you should choose a Linux Web Hosting provider that offers cPanel.
- cPanel is a feature rich GUI (graphical user interface) that performs the complex tasks behind the scenes. cPanel is user friendly and feature rich.
If you intend to use scripting languages like ASP/ASP.NET v 2.0 or databases like Microsoft SQL, ODBC/DSN you will want to look at a Windows Hosting option.
Also look at other details like Disk space that is being offered and bandwidth. Disk space and bandwidth are offered in large amounts by the leading Web Hosting providers. For a small web site this might not be a concern however look to the future if you intend to host multiple domain on one account you want this already built in to your account.
Are Instant backups offered? This is a must believe me you don’t want o start from scratch again.
Do you have an option to host multiple domains? This is an extremely valuable feature to consider for future growth in any business or personal web site. Image hosting 28 domains on one account for the same price that you pay for one.
Do they provide Fantastico or Fantastico Deluxe? If you wish to run a blog, forum, chat or any of the other various Web 2.0 applications Fantastico and/or Fantastico Deluxe is a must. With a couple of mouse clicks these applications are installed and everything is taking care of behind the scenes.
-
Imagine installing several blogs or forums with a couple of mouse clicks.
If you are going run an e-commerce site consider what e-commerce feature is offered. There are other options to process e-commerce transactions however for any this is a feature that they choose to have built in to their web hosing account.
Review the databases and scripts that are supported. The top web hosting providers have a large number of these built in.
Look at the Email options as well. You want to have the options of multiple to unlimited mail accounts.
What about the cPanel?
Many consider this very important. Inquire about the cPanel or control panel which is where you will be doing the customization to the backend of your website. It should be user-friendly and allow you customize your website to your satisfaction.
There are different web hosting plans to choose from.
Hosting Plans:
- Shared Hosting and Virtual Hosting
- Dedicated Hosting
- Reseller Hosting
Individual website owners or a small business site will more than likely choose a Shared Web Hosting plan or the Virtual Web Hosting plan.
The larger or complex sites will likely choose the Dedicated Web Hosting plan.
Reseller Hosting. If you are a web designer you might want to sign up for Reseller Hosting plan; you manage your clients’ websites from one single control panel without the need to remember multiple logins and passwords on different web hosts.
If in the future you move your domain from one host to another, find out how easy it is to do.
Does the new host support you? Most will offer free support for your domain transfer, website transfer, MySQL transfer, and transfer of other scripts that you might have on your existing website.
3. Customer Service/Phone Support/Live Chat Support/Email Support. This is a very crucial factor. If there is a problem with your domain or website you will need to get attended to ASAP. Find out whether all or most of the support mentioned above is offered 24/7. Give each of these offered support features a try for yourself. Try out the Live Chat facility before you sign up and see how quickly you are attended to. Call the Phone support line and see how well you are attended to. Get a personal feel for each of these and when you are convinced go ahead and sign up.
4. Price. Knowing your individual budget and knowing the market rate will really help you in this area. What is the web hosting provider’s guarantee? Find out whether you are given your money back in case you are unhappy with the service. The industry standard is a 30 or 45 day full money back guarantee is offered.
5. Network and Data Infrastructure. Ask about the infrastructure and the redundancy or backup measures available when there is a problem. Find out how well they prepare and adapt to the latest technologies in the industry.
These factors should give you excellent information about picking the correct domain or web host provider. Don’t settle for less when you can have more for less from a leading web hosting provider.
I wish you the best as you select your preferred domain or web host provider.

I agree you web hosting should be a priority when you start your website. You need to look at reliability and the ability to grow. The cheapest web hosting is not always the best.

Great blog post Rod! It is very important to choose a webhost that suits your needs.
I chose D9 Hosting because the two people that run D9 are internet marketers, so
they understand the needs of marketers and the best, for me, is that their customer
service is second to none.

Thanks for the info and I have heard that about D9 however I have not check them out. I will soon. It really is important to do your home work on web hosting providers. I did find out the hard way and I don’t recommend that, it is much easier to get it right the fist time.
I am very happy with http://www.learncpanelvideos.com/go/hosting and can recommend them as a great web hosting provider.
Thanks for stopping by

Rod, I just found this site tonight and I can’t tell you how informative this has been. I have been blogging for a short time, but have managed to get several sites up and running but with help (hired) from a friend. Now I’m going to take the time to learn some of this for myself. The cpanel I thought was always a little taboo, but am getting more comfortable with it. Thanks

What wordpress template do you suggest as a better one. You know how easy they are to change. If you suggest a better one why is it a better Wordress template?

Your writing style is quite a god guide for me if you like – I have recently started my own blog and I am really struggling to write articles!
March 10th, 2009 at 8:15 pm
Thanks for stopping by.
I consider myself still a novice at the writing however I now enjoy it much more.
Writing did not come natural for me I had to stay with it and focus to get my thoughts clearly stated in writing. I can sit and talk to you face to face really well however writing did take a focused effort. I enjoy writing now and do it often.
To become better at writing I made a four to five bullet point outline that provided the proper flow and filled in and connected the bullet topics.
One of the best how to improve your writing items that you need do, get really good at typing just this one thing removes that barrier and your writing will flow easier with out that one big obstacle in your way.
Hey a great skill that is also great to be good at is learning how to make a youtube video and here s the tutorial that will make it easy.
This how to make a videos tutorial goes way beyond how to make a youtube video.
